I TOO, AM AMERICA

Making the American Dream a reality
for young women and men of color

What We Do

I, Too AM (I2AM) is a call for inclusion and a demand for equality. We focus on leveling the playing field at the earliest stage of development, by educating, empowering and equipping young dreamers to leave their mark in their classrooms, communities and ultimately this country.

What Inspired Us

I2AM was inspired by the great poet, Langston Hughes, who boldly proclaimed: “I, too, am America”. The concept of the American Dream is founded on the central premise that all men (and women) are created equal and should be equally entitled to live freely and achieve greatly. However, when the Declaration of Independence was written by the founding fathers of this country, it did not apply to their darker brothers and sisters. Fast forward nearly 250 years, and people of color in America, are still calling for inclusion and equal opportunity.

How We
Do It

I2AM offers programs and services in four core areas, all aimed at providing ACCESS to the DREAM

Election Protection Kits

One of the most critical aspects of the American democracy, is suffrage, or right to vote. Exercising that right has never been more challenging or critical than during this current election. At I2AM, we’re encouraging everyone to vote early, but for those going to the polls, we want you to be safe. Simply submit an email to vote@i2am with your full name and mailing address and we’ll send you an “election protection” kit. Supplies are limited and kits will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis. Each kit includes:

  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Mask
  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Address of the polling place closest to address you provided
  • I2AM a voter sticker
  • Snack

Dream Sequence

Dream Sequence is a quarterly speaking series put on in conjunction with schools, churches and community-based organizations across the country. Through this program, I2AM seeks to inspire young dreamers on the infinite possibilities available to them, by exposing them to people who look like them, speak like them, and have similar upbringings – and are now dominating in the fields like literature, entertainment, engineering, communications, education and medicine.

Book Club

Required Reading: We know that books are the first passports many of our young dreamers and leaders will ever receive. Our “Required Reading” book club is focused on not only empowering youth, but transporting them through stories of powerful people, black like them, the globe over. We’ll take them back in time, deep into the present and far into the future through the written and imagined word.
